Lean Six Sigma


​SCS UK associates have significant experience within the automotive and manufacturing industries where Lean 6 sigma is part of the air you breath. More industry sectors are beginning to embrace this approach to improving quality and reducing waste. SCS UK associates are familiar with and practitioners of the concepts and implementation of these methods within the logistics function. 


Lean Six Sigma is a methodology that relies on a collaborative team effort to improve performance by systematically removing waste, it relies on line operators, team leaders and all levels of the operations understanding of the objectives of the business and the impact their daily duties have on achieving these.


Lean manufacturing (AKA lean enterprise) and Six Sigma seek to eliminate the eight kinds of waste, being Japanese in origin, they are:


  • Defects
  • Overproduction
  • Waiting
  • Non-utilized talent
  • Transportation
  • Inventory
  • Motion
  • Downtime


The DMAIC process of managing Six-Sigma projects is an abbreviation for Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control.  


  • Define - the stage where the project or area of the operation and the boundaries of influence or consideration are defined. 
  • Measure - quantify the problem in a defined way that reduces ambiguity and improves understanding of the core issues
  • Analyze - Don't take the data produced at face value, dig in to it and challenge core assumptions until the numbers balance and make sense
  • Improve - Put in place improvements and then rteview them to ensure the desired outcomes have been achived
  • Control - Hard and soft controls should be used to maintain improvements
